4: Composing your pages and posts

Where can I compose my pages and posts?

  • Directly in Blogger
  • Elsewhere and then copy and paste into Blogger

Composing directly into Blogger

For our short program, we recommend that you compose directly into Blogger.

  • Blogger has a toolbar that works just like any other word processor. As you hover over the icons on the toolbar, text shows you what each tool is for.
Blogger Toolbar and Icons

  • Remember to lay out your page or post with headings and text.
  • To add hyperlinks, select the Insert or Edit Link icon to the left of the Insert Image icon and the box below appears. We recommend selecting "Open this link in a new window".
  • 😱 All your text appears as gobbledygook, don't worry! You've changed from the Compose View to the HTML view by switching the toolbar icon at the extreme left. Just revert back to Compose View. Using HTML is an advanced technique and beyond the scope of this short program.
"Oh no, HTML!"
  • Yes, that's an emoji. Check out what's under that smiley face on the toolbar.
  • If you can't see the full toolbar, select the three dots to the right of the smiley face.
  • Remember you can leave your page or post in draft and compose it over a period of time.

Composing outside Blogger

If you're importing text into your page or post, we recommend that you either-
  • compose in TextEdit (or similar) or
  • paste the text into TextEdit (or similar) to strip out any formatting
  • DO NOT apply formatting such as bold and italic in Microsoft Word and paste as this will add extra code and may cause issues in your styling in Blogger
In this example, the text was copied from another published blog. Correcting it was a two-step process:-
  1. Cutting the text from the post, pasting it into TextEdit, cutting it from TextEdit and pasting it into the post.
  2. But the white still remained as the background in the blog was light grey. To remedy this, the text background colour was altered to light grey by selecting Text Background Colour from the Toolbar at the top of the post.

Settings in pages and posts

Pages don't have many settings:-

  • You can turn comments on or off.
  • If Meta tags are enabled in Settings, you can include keywords to describe your blog in Search Description. This can be done globally for the blog in the Settings or within each page and post. We suggest doing this globally.
  • You can preview your page.
  • You can save your page.

Posts have more options:-

  • You can turn comments on or off.
  • If Meta tags are enabled in Settings, you can include keywords to describe your blog in Search Description. This can be done globally for the blog in the Settings or within each page and post. We suggest doing this globally.
  • You can include Labels that allow you to organise your posts. Readers can use your labels to filter the posts presented. To add more than one label to your post, separate each with a comma.
  • You can schedule the future date your post is published.
  • You can preview your post.
  • You can save your post.
Note: You can choose the pages or posts you want to view - All, Published, Draft or Scheduled (only for posts).
