2: Adding pages to your blog

What is a page?

Pages are the static content of your blog that rarely need updating. Pages can be shown as tabs at the top of your blog or as links on the side. There's no limit to the number of pages that you can have in one blog. However, we suggest that you limit pages shown as tabs at the top of your blog to three or four. There's no limit to the number of pages that can be linked on the side of your blog.


Pages are good for:

  • introducing yourself or the purpose of your blog,
  • a snapshot of your family history research including a pedigree chart and
  • conditions for using the information in your blog.

Creating pages

  1. Sign in to Blogger
  2. On the left-hand side, select a blog
  3. From the menu on the left, click Pages
  4. In the top left, click New Pages 
  5. Enter a page title and content - see 4: Composing your page or post
  6. In the top right, click Preview page, Save or Publish - Once a page is published, it can't be saved but only republished by selecting Publish.
NOTE: For "searchability", it's recommended that your page title is no more than 60 characters.

Creating pages with a link to another website

  1. Sign in to Blogger
  2. On the left-hand side, select a blog
  3. From the menu on the left, click Layout
  4. In the Page List (Top) section next to Pages, click Edit
  5. Under the Configure Page List, click Add a new item
  6. Include a page name and Page URL, click Save
  7. Select where you want the page to appear in your list, click Save
  8. Click Save in the bottom right-hand corner
NOTE: For "searchability", it's recommended that your page title is no more than 60 characters.

Editing pages

  1. Sign in to Blogger
  2. On the left-hand side, select a blog
  3. From the menu on the left, click Pages
  4. Click on the title of the page you want to edit
  5. Edit your page
  6. In the top right, click Preview page, Save or Publish

Deleting pages

  1. Sign in to Blogger
  2. On the left-hand side, select a blog
  3. From the menu on the left, click Pages
  4. Point to the page you want to delete
  5. Click Discard this page

Selecting the pages to show

  1. Sign in to Blogger
  2. On the left-hand side, select a blog
  3. From the menu on the left, click Layout
  4. In the Pages section, select Edit to access the Configure Page List gadget
  5. Click Add a New Item and select Page Name from the drop-down menu
  6. Click Save and Save
  7. On the bottom right side, click Save

The difference between publishing pages and posts

Your post is published as soon as you select that Publish button and is immediately visible to your readers. A further step is required for your page to be visible to your readers. You also need to add your page in the Configure Page List gadget.

Your activity

Please follow the instructions above to write your first page. It only needs to be short as this is a practice exercise. It can be edited or deleted at any time. Try including an image as well. Here are some options but don't let these limit you:-
  • About this blog
  • About me
  • About my family history journey
There's no best way to do any of this. It's what suits you. Here are a few examples-
